63 Critters

These ‘critters’ are a rare breed of pig called, surprisingly enough the ‘Large black pig’ (locals go in for descriptive names). On a serious note this breed was common in the 15-16 century but due to the intensive farm methods and easier handling of the white varieties had all but died out by the 19 century.

In the last quarter of the 20th Century, people started to want  better quality food and the tastiness of this variety led to a resurgence in numbers.

I’m glad the large black pig is indeed a large black pig. Sometimes the names are not a true description!
